Our family loves adventure, we have tried a lot of things when it comes to extreme sports. One of the things we had never done before was riding dune buggies at by the beach. So for my husband's birthday I decided to take him out for an adventure.
We decided to choose Steve’s ATV Rentals for our experience. They were recommended by friends.
Just a few miles north from Santa Maria, you will find Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) one of the few places where off road vehicles can ride on the beach. The park has 3,500 acres of beach and sand dunes. We got a 2 hour rental because we figure two hours was enough time to enjoy our adventure.
When you get to Oceano Beach, you head to Steve's ATV Rentals office (store), located at 332 Pier Ave, Oceano, CA 93445. Once you sign all the forms you walk to the beach where you take a shuttle for a short tide to the Dunes.
Once you arrive to their trailer, you are instructed to watch a 10-15 min safety video. After that you are ready to get your gear. They provide you with a helmet. If you want gloves and googles you can bring your own or you can rent them there.
After that you get a small class on how to ride and operate your vehicle (we did not need this, since my husband has previous experience driving buggies and ATVs).
Always make sure you follow the speed limits. They are displayed and are only located in in certain areas, other than those areas you can ride as fast as your vehicle allows it.
Once you are ready it is time to head for the Dunes. The easiest way is to follow the path along the fence. You get a map and phone numbers in case you get stuck. We were on Polaris RZR 800cc which can be pretty fast. Dune Buggy at Pismo Beach was so much fun. My husband made sure we were hitting all the bumps and taking sharp turns to make it a true adventure. Watch a short video of our adventure

This sounds seriously SO awesome! My family would just love to do this! I have been out west a few times for work, but never for vacation.

I've never ridden or driven in a dune buggy but your photos sure make it look like a lot of fun. My wive vacationed with her family as a child in Pismo Beach it might be a great place to revisit.

Wow that really sounds like a great time. I would love to try that out with my family. We rode ATV's through the mountains in Colorado but never dune buggys, we have to try this one out! That looks like a lot of fun!
