Westfield Topanga will host the exhibit November 3 - December 31st
Bucket list for sure. Travel to Italy and visit all the museums and learn about art. Until then I am just super happy that I was able to experience the Up Close: Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel at Westfield Topanga Mall. Here, at the exhibit, you are able to enjoy one of the world’s most amazing artistic Italian Renaissance masterpieces: Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes that decorate the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome.
Up Close: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel recreates the awe and wonder of one of mankind’s greatest artistic achievements, while allowing its visitors to experience this art from a new perspective. With special expertise and care, the ceiling paintings from the Sistine Chapel have been reproduced using state-of-the-art technology. In order for the observer to fully engage and comprehend the artwork, the paintings have been reproduced in their original sizes. The overwhelming impression for the observer will be the dimensions of the art, the closeness to the picture, and the modern style of the exhibit. As a result, the visitor can explore the artwork up close at a distance impossible to achieve in the Sistine Chapel
The pop-up gallery allows people to come face to face with renowned scenes like the Creation of Adam or the Last Judgment, works that Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512.
Reproduced in large-scale photographs by Austrian photographer Erich Lessing, the dimensional paintings reveal details that visitors to the actual Sistine Chapel normally miss, from stapled together cracks in the ceiling to portraits of the artist’s friends among the figures. Lessing printed them through a unique process on cloth giving you the opportunity to gaze at 34 color-rich pieces on the ground floor level, including The Last Judgement.
During the media day presentation we had to the opportunity to meet Scott Sanders, Westfield’s Creative Head of Global Entertainment, who clearly is delighted by the idea of bringing the art to the public: “We wanted the Sistine Chapel exhibit to be accessible to as many people as possible.”
We also got a special treat. An art Historian walked us through the artwork, with one of the most amazing details about the paintings and the techniques used a the time. If you visit the exhibit you might not have the Historian with you, but you are able for just a small fee of $2 dollars to get the audio guided tour that will also provide information on each painting.
