Sweet and Savory Lightsaber Dippers
These edible lightsabers make an awesome snack for a party, or anytime! Simply coat thin breadsticks with melted white chocolate or sour cream, then roll in a variety of colored toppings, the best part is that they are prefect to celebrate May the 4th!

Feel free to swap out the toppings for alternate types of candy or crushed salty snacks according to what you have or are your household favorites. This project is a good opportunity to get the kids’ creative juices flowing as they think about what foods might be the perfect match for Luke’s blue lightsaber or Darth Vader’s red one. Don’t worry though, the only battles that will be taking place using these lightsabers is who gets to eat the last one!

This project is a good opportunity to get the kids’ creative juices flowing as they think about what foods might be the perfect match for Luke’s blue lightsaber or Darth Vader’s red one. Don’t worry though, the only battles that will be taking place using these lightsabers is who gets to eat the last one!

Ingredients

Sweet and Savory Lightsaber Dippers
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ⅔ cup white chocolate chips (or chopped white chocolate)
  • 24 thin breadsticks
Toppings:
  • Cheese puffs (or nacho cheese chips)
  • Pea crisps
  • 1 lime
  • Blue hard candies
  • Purple hard candies
  • ¼ cup strawberry ice cream topping
  • Red sugar sprinkles
  • Aluminum foil

Preparation

  1. In a small bowl, whisk the sour cream and olive oil until smooth.
  2. Place the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high 1-2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
  3. Crush the cheese puffs onto a small plate.
  4. Crush the pea crisps onto a small plate. Zest ½ lime over the crushed pea crisps and stir to combine.
  5. Place the colored hard candies into separate zip-top bags and seal, leaving a small opening at the top for air to escape.
  6. Crush using a rolling pin until candies are in small pieces (you may want to cover the bags with a kitchen towel while you do this) then place into separate bowls.
  7. Cut 24 small squares of aluminum foil, then wrap the bottom 2 inches of each breadstick to make lightsaber “handles”.
  8. One by one, coat each breadstick in melted white chocolate or sour cream mixture, and then shower with the sweet or savory topping of choice. If at any point the white chocolate begins to harden while you’re working, microwave again for 15-30 seconds and stir to melt it.
  9. For the red lightsabers, first coat them in white chocolate, then apply a light coating of strawberry ice cream topping, and then shower with red sugar sprinkles.
  10. If you have one, a wire baking rack works perfectly to hold the lightsabers upright while they dry. If not, simply line them up on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  11. Allow the toppings to set for at least 15 minutes, then serve!
