With so much to do every day - and those things never-ending, or so it seems - it’s easy to forget about our health, and it’s certainly easy (and usual) not to make it a priority. After all, with a long to-do list, everything else clearly has to come first. However, it can be done (and should be done), and it doesn’t have to be something that upsets your current routine and turns it on its head. In fact, if you make some small adjustments, you might not really notice the change at all, until you realize that it’s making you feel much happier and healthier in yourself. With that in mind, here are some of the things you can do that might be small changes, but that will help you live a healthier life. Read on to find out more. Start With BreakfastOne small change that can make a big difference in terms of how healthy you are is to ensure you have a good breakfast every morning. Breakfast is what kickstarts your metabolism and fuels your body ready for the day ahead, so it’s wise to make it worthwhile and to eat something that keeps you going until lunchtime. If you can do that, all kinds of positive things will happen including the fact that you’ll more than likely be a lot more productive, you’ll have more energy, and, strange as it might seem, you could lose weight - your metabolism will work more quickly, burning more fat as a result. The best breakfasts include whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, so think ahead about what you might want to eat and even prepare it the night before to ensure you don’t skip this important meal. Learn First AidIt’s good to live in as healthy a way as possible, but it’s also important to focus on being prepared for the unexpected, as much as it’s possible to be, at least. Learning online CPR (which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can be a hugely valuable skill that could even save a life; it’s well worth investing some time into learning what to do if that could be the outcome. As well as this essential skill, you can learn other aspects of first aid in various courses, and they’ll all be useful in life, helping you to keep your family and even yourself healthier. You can learn how to spot the symptoms of various illnesses, for example, or how to treat a wound, stop bleeding, or deal with a burn, among many other skills. The more you know about first aid, the healthier you can be. Limit Processed Foods And SugarsProcessed foods and added sugars can cause inflammation, weight gain, and various other health issues - some studies suggest they can even lead to some cancers. That’s why it’s so important to reduce how much of them you have in your diet, and even replace them with healthier ingredients altogether. If you can switch your processed food and all those things you eat that have so much sugar in them for healthier things like fruits and vegetables, you’ll be helping yourself and your health massively. Fruit and veg are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are all crucial for your overall health, so try to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need to be as healthy as you possibly can. Make More FriendsIt’s hard to make friends as we get older, which is a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless. Children will often happily just go up to a stranger (of the same age) and start talking to them or playing with them, happy to just make friends with as many people as they can. By the time we become adults, however, that skill is often lost - we’re much more worried about being judged or doing something wrong, and for a lot of people, it’s hard to change and add more people to their lives. However, studies have shown that having friends is good for you, and that those with deep friendships tend to live longer than those who are more isolated. Plus, they’ll be healthier during those extra years as well. Therefore, it’s wise to make some time to try to connect with other people when you can. You don’t have to start inviting people over to your home or hanging out with them in various places, but you can make an effort to talk to more people at work or when you go out, or perhaps join some online forums that link to your hobbies and preferences. It can make you feel happier and healthier, so it’s well worth trying at least. It’s hard to make new friends or even acquaintances, but once you start, it will become easier. If you’re really struggling, there are online videos and courses that can help show you what to do and boost your confidence, so don’t give up. Get Enough SleepSomething that can make a huge difference to your overall health and happiness and that should be easy enough for everyone to do is to get enough sleep. That could mean getting more sleep, or getting better quality sleep, or perhaps both, which is why it’s wise to look objectively at how much sleep you’re getting and how good that sleep might be and consider how you could improve things.
You should be aiming for around seven to nine hours of sleep each night, so to begin with, why not make a relaxing bedtime routine so that you can get to sleep at the right time to ensure that you can get enough hours in before you have to get up again? By a relaxing bedtime routine we mean something like putting your nightclothes on, having a warm bath, switching off the TV and other screens and reading a book or listening to music, and so on. Not only will you feel more relaxed, but your body will know it’s time to go to sleep and start producing melatonin, which is the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. Even if it seems strange to be going to sleep earlier than usual, when you realize how good you feel when you do, you’ll know it’s worthwhile.
