Mary Poppins Returns Movie Review

MARY POPPINS RETURNS arrives in theaters everywhere on December 19th!

Mary Poppins Returns is pure magic.  Maybe not since the original Mary Poppins will a movie capture you and fill you with as much joy. Mary Poppins says “everything is possible, even the impossible”, and this rings true with this movie, because Rob Marshall and team have done the impossible. They’ve made a film on the level of the original.

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins really is practically perfect in every way. Every line and every movement she makes is so quintessential Mary Poppins, while not copying Julie Andrews. Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack should be in line for an Oscar Nomination. He has a quality about him during the entire film that is so joyful and just exudes happiness. We know Miranda from Hamilton of course, and he brings a bit of that to this role, plus a side of him you haven’t seen before.  

This is also a film we needed right now. Director Rob Marshall gave us such an uplifting film at a time in the world where it is most needed.  It is a visually dazzling masterpiece that provides a complete escape for the movie-goer. The 2D animation which was animated by some of the original 2D Disney animators, is completely stunning, and literally pops off the screen. This sequel really did feel like an extension of the original. The songs by Marc Shaiman felt like they could have been written by Richard Sherman. The movie brings us the Mary Poppins that we’ve come to know and love but it in a 2018 setting, so it never feels old or out of date.
Other great performances come from legends like Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury. Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, and Colin Firth are all at the top of their game as well.

Another wonderful thing about the film is the contrast of the scenes of the real streets of London, to the fantastical world that’s created with Mary Poppins’ arrival. Through the vivid costumes and sets, and choreography, this is achieved on a level that is sure to make Mary Poppins Returns a contender in many categories for award season. So grab the family this holiday season for a movie that is sure to delight all ages and a movie we surely need now more than ever.
