As a parent, you are responsible for helping your child form healthy habits that they will rely on in later life. The easiest way to achieve this goal is by leading by example, as children will often pick up on and emulate the behaviors or actions of their parents.

This means that if you follow a healthy lifestyle, your children are likely to follow suit.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for following a healthy lifestyle as a family. 

Ensure they follow a healthy, balanced diet. A healthy lifestyle often starts in the kitchen. As such, you can protect your family’s best interests by ensuring that you are all following a healthy, balanced diet. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can go about achieving this goal, such as by: 

  • Incorporating whole foods into your diet
  • Meal planning and prepping in advance
  • Ensuring that everyone gets their 5 a day of fruit and veg 

Make sure that you stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is a great way to ensure that your family stays fit and healthy. If you find it hard to get your children to drink enough water, then you may want to hand out electrolyte popsicles as snacks. This will help to prevent dehydration, especially during warmer weather.

Exercise as a family. Exercising is your path to a happy, healthy future. This is because it can help with everything from weight regulation to stress and anxiety reduction. Furthermore, exercising as a family provides you with the opportunity to spend quality time together. 

While this does not mean that you should try out for your kid’s sports team, there are plenty of activities you can participate in as a family. For example, you could go out for a walk, hike or even a run. Alternatively, you can work out at home or in your yard.

Get more sleep. Your sleeping habits (also known as sleep hygiene) can also have an influence on your overall health and well-being, both as a child and as an adult. As such, working to ensure that you all get better sleep will help you transition to a healthier lifestyle. 

You can improve your sleeping habits by: 

  • Going to bed at the same time each night
  • Waking up at the same time each morning
  • Avoiding caffeine in the evening/late afternoon
  • Spending an hour before bed winding down and relaxing 

Attend regular health check-ups. While following a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent illness and boost your immunity, this does not mean that you can skip or avoid any health check-ups. This is because doing so could mean that serious conditions go unchecked, putting your future well-being at risk. As such, you should make sure that everyone in your household attends any and all appointments that are offered to them. 

Talk about how you are feeling. Following a healthy lifestyle means taking good care of both your physical and mental health. This is because they often work in tandem with each other. One way in which you can achieve this is by talking openly about how you are feeling, as opposed to attempting to hide this from your children. While you should keep conversations age-appropriate, being honest and letting them know when you’ve had a bad day shows them that it is okay not to be okay. It also means that they are much more likely to ask for help when they are struggling, as you are actively working to break down the stigma surrounding mental health.

In some cases, you may also benefit from attending therapy or finding a therapist for your child. While this may seem a little daunting, counselling sessions have their benefits for people of all ages, especially when it comes to tackling big emotions and developing healthy coping mechanisms. As such, it is not something you should view as a last resort, but rather part of following a healthy lifestyle and ensuring that your needs are met. 

Limiting screentime. Working to limit or reduce everyone's screen time can also be useful when following a healthy lifestyle, as this kind of change is typically associated with lower levels of stress and anxiety and improved sleeping habits. 

In short, following a healthy lifestyle as a parent does not have to be all that complicated. Following the advice outlined above will help make this transition as smooth as possible for the entire family, meaning that you’ll soon begin to notice the benefits of this kind of change.
