If you’re like most people who were raised (partially) online, then you use the internet a lot. If you’re also a blogger, or someone else who is particularly active online, then you might spend a lot of time on social media, or other large congregation spaces on the internet. As a result, you have likely seen the concerning trend that these spaces have to gather a wide range of diverse voices and pit them together. It can be stressful to behold, to say the least, and even worse to take part in. It’s easy to forget that the internet is a wide and diverse place, that can offer a lot more than these places where so much attention, effort, and strong emotions can be concentrated. Here, we’re going to look at some of the places where you can still find the chance to relax and unwind, to get away from your stresses rather than add to them. The cozy gaming spaceWhether you’ve always been a gamer or you have simply found yourself getting more into the relaxing and laid-back side of things, there are big communities around certain cozy games. In fact, a great place to find them is the Wholesome Games website, which can help you find not only the latest games for sitting back and relaxing but also offers a great way to connect with people who have much the same interests. Sink into a relaxing soundscapeThere’s something meditative about laying back and letting yourself drift away to some relaxing sounds, and the internet has built several communities around just that. ASMR videos are on the right, but for those who want a sense of community, the live-streaming space offers an interesting pastime in the storytelling space. Reading streamers do exactly as you might imagine, reading stories, articles, or poetry, and a lot of people use them to co-work or study. Get a slice of a more laid-back lifeThe internet is not just a collection of websites. It’s a tool that offers a window into the lives of others, and you might find your community by looking into more niche offerings. If you live in a city or small town, for instance, and want to see a more idyllic, rural lifestyle, then Vickys Animals is one blog that might be for you. The blogosphere remains one environment where it’s really easy to connect with people who are on much the same page as you. Explore a host of museums and toursThere are a lot of virtual tours you can find online of many of the world’s museums and cultural sites. Google Arts & Culture is one place where you can find a huge range of virtual tours to learn and explore all manner of galleries, as well as historical and scientific exhibitions.
The internet might feel like it’s shrinking into a smaller number of websites with larger user bases, but there are still corners of relaxation to be found. The examples above are just some that might help you chill out and enjoy some peace online.
