Drive west on highway 30There are a lot of things to do at Maui. Almost everywhere you go they are going to offer you tours. There are also a lot of places that advertise low price tours, but as usual there is a catch. In order for you to get the low price you have to attend a time-share presentation or commit to something. One of the best things to do in Maui is just to drive west on the highway 30 and stop in different places. I have to warn you. There is no really signs on the road for these places, but you will see around the highway some cars stopped at the side of the road, and my advice is to stop there to look around and you will discover great beautiful places. Going west, drive until the highway it is not a highway anymore but becomes a road. It is around mile 43. Turn around and drive back stop when you see cars on the side of the road. The first think you can find, around mile 42 ½ is the Olivine pools. Something that most books will not tell you is that most attractions are not just some steps from where you park. Most of them require you to climb down and up on rocks. So please take some tennis shoes or water shoes. Flip flops will be slippery. It is quite an exercise, so take water with you too. Keep driving and you will also find the Nakalele Blowhole. Once again you have to go down around 1000 feet (on rocks) but once you get down, the experience is unique. There are times the blowhole is not blowing, but stick around, because sooner or later it will be. You will also see beautiful bays and beaches so stop to enjoy the calm water and even some snorkeling. Take water and snacks with you as the road does not have stores or restaurants. Also make sure you have gas on your car.
The drive with stops will take around 4 to 5 hours, which will give you time to schedule a nice dinner at Lahaina. Monsters, Inc is coming back to theaters December 19,2012 and this time the fun will be on 3D Sunrise at the Haleakala (volcano crater) You are going to find many tours offered to do this activity. My advice is to save your money and use your rental car. Most tours cost around 50-70 per person and in reality you are going to see the same thing if you drive. The reason you might want to have the tour is to do the tour that offers to bike down, but since my son it is only 7 that was not an option for us. You will need to leave your hotel really early for this. If you are in the tour, you probably have to leave earlier, just because they stop to pick up other people on the way to the crater. If you are driving, make sure you have enough gas in your car. You will need to leave your hotel around 3:30 am to make sure you get to the top before sunrise. Check the sunrise time because it varies depending on the season. We left at 3:30 am it is was enough time. The road is narrow so be careful. You will need to pay $10.00 per car to enter the National Park. Keep your receipt because it is valid for 3 days and you can use it to get into the other entrance if you drive to Hana Once you get the top, it is going to be really cold. Take jackets, blankets, pillows and even hot chocolate or coffee. There are no restaurants or shops, so take snacks and water as well. Be prepared to wait. Little ones might want to stay in the car until it is the actual time to watch the sunrise. Make sure you know the settings on your camera to take good pictures while dark and then when the sun is coming out. Take lots of pictures and enjoy your once in a life experience. Even you do this again, each day the sunrise is different. On the way down, drive slow, use the low gears on the car because some cars breaks fail. My son got sick on the way down, so take some bags just in case. It is difficult to stop the car. This is a must experience and I recommend to do this early on your trip. |
