7 Reasons You Can't Target Fat Loss

When it comes to health and fitness, a common goal is for people to lose fat from specific areas of the body, whether it's from the arms, thighs, stomach or love handles. Many people look for workouts or diets that promise to melt fat from their trouble spots while leaving the rest of their body alone.

One question that comes up often is how to get rid of fat in the upper pubic area, also known as the FUPA. While it's completely normal to want to tone certain regions, the reality is that targeted fat loss, also known as spot reduction, simply doesn't work the way many people hope it will. Here are 7 reasons why you can't target fat loss and what you should focus on instead.

  1. Fat loss is a whole body process. You may want to lose weight from your stomach or from your thighs, but when you lose fat, your body doesn't pick and choose where it comes from. You might be desperate to lose weight from your legs, but you'll find that your face loses weight first. Fat reduction happens across your entire body based on your genetics, hormones, and metabolism. Doing 1000 sit-ups won't necessarily give you a flat stomach and endless quats won't guarantee slimmer thighs.
  2. Genetics play a major part. Your genetic makeup determines your body's fat storage pattern. Some people will hold more fat in their abdomen, but others in their hips, thighs or lower back. If you're wondering how to get rid of fat in the upper pubic area, genetics may be the reason why that area is more stubborn for you. It's not that you're doing the wrong exercise, it may just be the last place your body lets go of stored fat.
  3. Localised exercises don't burn local fat. A common misconception is that exercising a certain area of your body will burn fat from there. For example, doing crunches will strengthen your abdominal muscles, but it won't necessarily burn belly fat. Similarly, targeting muscles under the pubic region with lower ab workouts won't directly affect the fat above them. The exercises contain and strengthen the area, but they won't reveal those muscles until overall body fat is reduced.
  4. Hormones can affect your fat storage. Cortisol, insulin, and estrogen can all affect where your body stores fat. High stress levels can cause elevated cortisol, which is linked to stubborn fat storage in the midsection and lower body. Hormonal imbalances, especially as we age, can also make it more difficult to shed fat in certain areas. Getting quality sleep, managing stress and eating a balanced diet can help regulate your hormones and support healthier fat distribution over time.
  5. Crash diets can backfire. Very low calorie diet and extreme dieting might seem like a quick fix, but they usually backfire quite quickly. Severely restricting your calories can lead to muscle loss and that includes muscle of your heart. It could also lead to increased fat retention because your body goes into panic mode and tries to store everything. Instead of focusing on rapid results, look for results over time. You didn't gain weight overnight, so it will take more than overnight to lose it.
  6. It may not be fat you're holding. Sometimes what you might perceive as stubborn fat on your body is actually water retention or bloating. Poor diet, hormonal shifts, and even sitting for long periods can lead to water retention in the lower belly and pubic regions. By reducing processed foods, cutting excess sodium, and staying active through the day, you won't have to worry too much about this. It won't melt the fat off your body, but reducing bloating can help you feel comfortable.
  7. You're not being patient enough. It's hard to hear, but it's true. Many people give up too soon. Fat loss, especially from certain areas, can take time. Consistency with your workouts, nutrition and recovery routines is key. And it's common for fat to come off in reverse order of how it's stored, so the areas you want to shrink the most might be the last to change. Stay committed and track your progress over the weeks and months, not just days.

If you're frustrated with how to get rid of fat in the upper pubic area or any other area of your body, you're not alone. The key is to stop chasing quick fixes and focus on the strategies that improve your health and fitness as a whole. You may not be able to choose where you lose fat, but you can choose how you support your body through the process.
