4 Ways to Take Care of Your Spine as an Office Worker

There is nothing better in this economy than having a job that lasts, but you still need to be healthy while you’re in it. A job that has you sitting for hours a day is not going to be the most comfortable job to work, and it can have a significant impact on your spine if you’re not careful.

Moving around while you’re at work is important to keep your spine healthy, but as an office worker you need to remember that posture matters! You can avoid the potential long-term issues that come with a desk job with our four ways to take care of your spine as an office worker. Let’s take a look below:

  1. Go and see a doctor. If you’re dealing with pain in your back and it won’t go away, then it’s time to see a professional for chiropractic care. You need to see a specialist who knows how to diagnose and treat muscle and spine disorders, especially if they’re caused by a pressure injury such as sitting for long periods. They can help with hands-on spinal adjustments, relieving pain caused by repetitive stress injuries.
  2. Talk to your boss about the furniture. When was the last time you had an ergonomics assessment at work? Creating a workspace that will keep you comfortable is your boss’ job, and you should have a workplace assessment done as soon as possible. They can work on making sure that you have a supportive chair, a desk at the right height and your monitor at the right height, too. The backrest and footrest you use should be supportive of your spine’s lumbar region and you should be at the right height to avoid eye and neck strain.
  3. Take regular breaks. If you want to prevent any spinal injuries, you need to be up and about every hour. You need to avoid stiffness and tension and regular breaks will ensure that you are able to stretch your muscles and bones a little. You can even get up purely to stretch out, and simple exercises like shoulder rolls and neck tilts will ensure that you can feel more comfortable while you work. Sometimes, using a standing desk can really make a difference to your comfort while you’re working and that will make a big difference to your comfort.
  4. Work on your core. Sometimes, your spinal issues can be better supported when your core muscles are worked on. Office workers can benefit from core exercises that stabilise the body and muscles of the abdomen. Incorporating core strength exercises will help to prevent discomfort and allow you to sit straighter and stronger for longer.

It’s vital that you take care of your spine if you want to maintain your overall health. If you are spending the majority of your working day at a desk, getting the right support from your healthcare provider and your boss will make all the difference to your physical health and your pain levels.
