As the weather gets hotter and the plants start to bloom, you know you’re in for a bout of seasonal allergies. This will likely affect you throughout spring, summer, and the early parts of fall. Cue the worst few months of every year. You know these allergies will come, and yet you do nothing to treat them. It’s almost like you’re resigned to dealing with the typical symptoms - a scratchy throat, itchy eyes, a runny/stuffy nose, and so on - so you sit there and suffer in silence. It will pass eventually (you tell yourself) so why bother making an effort when you’ll be fine in a few weeks? Well, it turns out that leaving your seasonal allergies untreated can be bad for a host of reasons - including the three you see below. Untreated allergies cause poor-quality sleepHave you noticed how sleeping during the spring/summer/early autumn is always a lot harder? It’s because of your allergies! Having a stuffy nose makes it harder to get to sleep and stay asleep as you’re struggling to breathe. When your nose blocks in the middle of the night, you’re likely to awaken - sometimes coughing and spluttering. It means your sleep quality is far worse than it should be, which can lead to some seriously unhealthy habits. You’re more likely to snack and binge eat when you’re tired and the tiredness leads to excessive stress. There’s an avalanche of knock-on effects that happen when you don’t sleep well, which is why you should treat your allergies to alleviate the symptoms at night. Sometimes, all you need is a good allergy-defense nasal spray to prevent congestion and sleep soundly. Untreated allergies lead to hearing problemsWere you aware of the link between spring allergies and hearing loss? When your allergies are left untreated, they can cause inflammation and congestion in your sinuses. This includes your inner ears where the eustachian tubes get blocked. That results in a build-up of pressure and your hearing starts to suffer. You may experience temporary hearing loss - but this could become permanent. For one, too much pressure could cause permanent damage to your inner ears, leading to long-term hearing loss. Secondly, you may overcompensate for temporary hearing loss by turning the volume up on everything, which will further damage your ears. The right allergy medication prevents this inflammation and stops your ears from suffering Untreated allergies put you at an increased health riskThe “fun” thing about allergies is that they cause both nasal congestion and an excessively running nose. It’s one or the other depending on the day - and having a runny nose means you’re more likely to develop infections and catch colds. This is more of a risk during the end of summer/beginning of fall - but not dealing with these symptoms puts you in a bad position.
Moreover, allergy symptoms are shown to trigger asthma. If you’re asthmatic or bordering on having asthma, untreated allergies could cause respiratory problems and make you prone to health problems like these. So, while leaving your allergies untreated might seem like a smart idea, it can lead to so many long-term problems. Take antihistamines before the allergy season starts to build up immunity and use a nasal spray for congestion and to prevent pressure in your sinuses. Both are easy to do and will prevent all the issues shown above.
